He spearheads the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Institute, which functions as the European WHO Collaborating Centre for the control and prevention of infectious diseases.

Van Damme’s main fields of expertise include epidemiology and social medicine. He has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed papers and is on the editorial boards of several scientific journals that focus on the study of vaccines and vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. He has received numerous prestigious awards and is as a highly regarded international expert in his field.
