Professor Nadia Zakaria obtained her medical degree from the University of Karachi in Pakistan and went on to specialize in limbal stem cell therapy at the University of Antwerp.

She is currently the director of translational medicine in ophthalmology at US-based Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. She is also a guest professor at the University of Antwerp, where she formerly led the Ophthalmology Research Team at the Centre for Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine.

She has been awarded numerous grants and prizes, including a prize for the most innovative research on regenerative medicine with cells and tissues by the Belgian Association for Bioindustries. In 2009, Zakaria was awarded the Jules Francois Award for her scientific research and important contributions to ophthalmology. She regularly peer reviews for several prestigious journals and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Research and Ophthalmology.
