He is affiliated with KU Leuven, one of Flanders’ five universities, where he heads the Clinical and Epidemiological Virology Laboratory. Van Ranst holds several board positions at different scientific institutions. Since 1995, he is also academically affiliated with the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Charles University in Prague, where he teaches bioinformatics.

He has published more than 270 articles in peer-reviewed journals and scientific books on molecular evolution and bioinformatics, and has won numerous international awards. Currently, Van Ranst plays a prominent role in the fight against the coronavirus.
