Emeritus professor baron Marc Van Montagu is a pioneer in plant molecular biology. Together with molecular biologist, Jozef Schell, he discovered the mechanism for gene transfer between Agrobacterium tumefaciens and plants.
His technique is now used worldwide to produce genetically engineered plants. Van Montagu helped establish biotech firms Plant Genetic System and CropDesign.
Through his career, he produced over 1,100 scientific publications that have been cited more than 90,000 times. For his accomplishments, he has received numerous prestigious awards and honors.
